8 Best Bollywood Thrillers to Watch on a Rainy Day
There is no better weather for a thriller than rain hammering the windows while you are safe on the couch. Bollywood has produced some genuinely world-class suspense films — here are eight of the best, ranked, perfect for your next rainy day. Availability rotates across platforms, so check Netflix, Prime Video or official YouTube channels before you settle in.
8. Baby (2015)
Akshay Kumar leads an undercover counter-terror unit in this taut, no-nonsense spy thriller. Neeraj Pandey directs with a documentarian’s eye — no songs interrupting the tension, just mission after mission. Grips from the first scene.
7. Special 26 (2013)
Based on a true story: con artists posing as CBI officers raid the corrupt. Akshay Kumar again, this time charming rather than brutal, and a climax that is genuinely clever. Smart, fun, and endlessly rewatchable.
6. Talaash (2012)
Aamir Khan plays a Mumbai cop investigating a celebrity’s death while drowning in his own grief. Slow, moody, and beautifully atmospheric — this is a thriller about loss as much as crime. The ending divides people; I found it haunting.
5. A Wednesday (2008)
Naseeruddin Shah versus Anupam Kher in a battle of wits across one tense Mumbai afternoon. Made on a tiny budget, it proves that a great script beats a big budget every time. The final ten minutes are electric.
4. Drishyam (2015)
Ajay Devgn’s Vijay will do anything to protect his family — and I mean anything. A remake done right, with a puzzle-box plot that rewards close attention. You will want to rewatch it immediately just to catch what you missed.
3. Ugly (2013)
Anurag Kashyap’s darkest film: a missing child, and every adult involved is worse than the last. Bleak, brilliant, and not for the faint-hearted. The rare thriller with something genuinely upsetting to say about people.
2. Andhadhun (2018)
A fake-blind pianist witnesses a murder in this deliriously twisty black comedy-thriller. Ayushmann Khurrana and Tabu are phenomenal, and the ending is still being debated years later. The most fun you can have being confused.
1. Kahaani (2012)
Vidya Balan’s pregnant woman searching Kolkata for her missing husband — and nothing is what it seems. Sujoy Ghosh directs a masterclass in misdirection, and the climax is one of Indian cinema’s all-time great twists. The best Bollywood thriller ever made, in my book.
Make It a Marathon
Pick three, make pakoras, and let the rain do the rest. Start with Kahaani if you have never seen it — thank me later. And when the rain stops, work through our 10 Bollywood classics every film lover should watch.
