13 Best Horror Movies for a Proper Halloween Night
Halloween isn’t really our festival, let’s be honest. But you don’t need pumpkins and costumes to enjoy the best part of it — a proper horror movie night. October nights are finally getting cooler, the fan is off, the house is quiet, and there’s no better time to turn off every light and scare yourself silly.
The only rule of a horror night: no piracy, no shady download links. Every film below is available on legal streaming in Pakistan — most of them on Netflix or Prime Video. (Streaming libraries shuffle every month, so search the title in your app before you lock in your plans.)
Here are 13 horror movies worth your night, from all-time classics to desi chillers.
1. The Conjuring (2013)
The one that restarted modern horror. Based on the “true” case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it’s a haunted-house story told with old-school patience — creaking doors, clapping hands in the dark, and one of the scariest hide-and-seek scenes ever filmed. If you watch only one Hollywood horror film this year, make it this one.
2. Hereditary (2018)
This isn’t a jump-scare movie; it’s a slow, sickening dread that follows a grieving family. Toni Collette gives one of the great horror performances, and the last twenty minutes are genuinely upsetting. Watch it when you want horror that stays in your head for days, not just during the film.
3. Get Out (2017)
Jordan Peele’s masterpiece is horror with a brain — a young man visits his girlfriend’s family home and everything feels slightly, politely wrong. It’s tense, clever, and the kind of film you’ll want to discuss for an hour after it ends. Perfect if your group likes thinking as well as screaming.
4. A Quiet Place (2018)
The concept is brilliant in its simplicity: creatures that hunt by sound, so a family must live in total silence. You’ll find yourself holding your breath without realising it. Watch it with the volume up and the room silent — it turns your own living room into part of the film.
5. The Exorcist (1973)
Fifty years old and still the benchmark. The story of a possessed young girl and the two priests trying to save her remains disturbing because it plays everything straight — no winks, no jokes. Modern horror learned everything from this film. Respect the classic.
6. It (2017)
Pennywise the clown ruined sewers for an entire generation. Beneath the scares it’s really a coming-of-age story about a group of bullied kids — think Stand By Me, but with a shape-shifting monster. The 2017 version is the one to watch: big, scary, and surprisingly emotional.
7. Train to Busan (2016)
Korea’s zombie masterpiece, and proof that the best horror has a beating heart. A father and daughter trapped on a speeding train during a zombie outbreak — it’s relentless, but what makes it special is how much you end up caring about the passengers. Keep tissues nearby; this one hurts.
8. Tumbbad (2018)
India’s finest folk horror, and criminally underseen. Set in a rain-soaked cursed village, it’s a dark fable about greed wrapped in genuinely gorgeous, terrifying imagery. The monster Hastar is the stuff of nightmares. If you think desi cinema can’t do horror, this film will change your mind in two hours.
9. Stree (2018)
Horror-comedy done right. A small town haunted by a female spirit who abducts men, and a group of friends trying to survive her — it’s funny, spooky, and the rare horror film the whole family can enjoy. Great pick if your group includes people who scare easily.
10. Insidious (2010)
From the director of The Conjuring, this one takes a tired premise — a child in a coma — and twists it into something genuinely original with its “Further” spirit world. The demon standing behind the crib is an image you won’t forget. The sequels are optional; the original is essential.
11. Sinister (2012)
A true-crime writer moves his family into a house where a murder happened, then finds a box of old home movies in the attic. What he watches on those reels is some of the most disturbing found-footage horror ever made. Not for the faint-hearted — this one was literally measured as one of the scariest films ever in a scientific study.
12. The Nun (2018)
Part of The Conjuring universe, set in a creepy Romanian abbey with a demonic nun. It’s more gothic atmosphere than deep storytelling — foggy corridors, ancient curses, candlelight — but on a Halloween night with the lights off, atmosphere is exactly what you want.
13. Pari (2018)
Anushka Sharma’s dark, grimy take on horror — no songs, no comedy, just a deeply unsettling story rooted in Bengali folklore. It’s bleak and strange and unlike anything else on this list. End your night here if you want to go to bed genuinely uneasy.
Where to watch these in Pakistan
