10 Best Pakistani Movies of All Time

Pakistani cinema has lived several lives — the golden age of Lollywood, the quiet years, and the loud, confident revival of the last decade. Picking the ten best Pakistani movies of all time means honouring all of it: films that broke records, films that broke rules, and films that simply broke hearts.

This is our list. Yours will differ, and that argument is half the fun.

1. The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022)

The highest-grossing Pakistani film ever made, and it earns the title. Bilal Lashari’s Punjabi action epic took a 1979 cult character and rebuilt him with world-class production design, bone-crunching action and a thunderous Fawad Khan performance. We reviewed it in depth in our Legend of Maula Jatt review — it changed what Pakistani filmmakers believed was possible.

2. Khuda Kay Liye (2007)

The film that restarted everything. Shoaib Mansoor’s bold drama about faith, music and extremism proved a Pakistani film could be serious, successful and talked about everywhere. Without Khuda Kay Liye, there is no revival — it is that important.

3. Bol (2011)

Mansoor again, this time with a furious, compassionate story about a family crushed by patriarchy. Humaima Malick’s performance still stings, and the film’s final act remains one of the most debated in Pakistani cinema. Difficult, essential viewing.

4. Waar (2013)

For a generation of viewers, Waar was the moment Pakistani cinema got its swagger back. A slick counter-terrorism action film with Shaan Shahid at full power, it smashed box office records and made event-movie culture real again in Pakistan.

5. Cake (2018)

Asim Abbasi’s tender family drama about siblings reuniting around an ailing parent did something rare: it trusted silence. Beautifully shot and acted with restraint, Cake showed the revival could do intimate as brilliantly as it did loud.

6. Joyland (2022)

Pakistan’s first film at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard and a standing ovation. Saim Sadiq’s Lahore-set story of a young man who joins an erotic theatre is daring, humane and quietly devastating — a landmark for Pakistani cinema on the world stage.

7. Bin Roye (2015)

A glossy romantic drama spun out of the beloved Bin Roye Aansu universe, with Mahira Khan luminous in the lead. It travelled internationally, charmed the diaspora, and proved romance could carry a big release. If you love its star, do not miss our ranking of Mahira Khan’s best performances.

8. Punjab Nahi Jaungi (2017)

A big, joyful, big-hearted blockbuster — Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat in a romance soaked in Punjabi culture, wedding colour and hit music. It ruled the box office for months and remains a festive rewatch favourite.

9. Actor in Law (2016)

Fahad Mustafa as a struggling actor who poses as a lawyer, with the legendary Om Puri in one of his final roles. A sharp, funny satire that entertains while it pokes the system — proof that Pakistani comedies could have brains as well as jokes.

10. Load Wedding (2018)

Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza’s satire on the wedding industry pairs Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat with a message about dowry delivered through song, colour and heartbreak. Socially sharp and hugely entertaining.
